LG Optimus Me P350 is a Low-End Android Smartphone...

Mobile World Congress isn't just about highfalutin handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S II. There are also plenty of enticing smart phones that sit slightly further back from the cutting edge, the LG Optimus Me P350 being one of them. The Me is cut from the same cloth as the rather spiffing LG Optimus One P500, and runs Android 2.2 Froyo. We got our hands on one, and below are our first impressions.

We don't have a release date for the Me yet, but LG has stated that it will be its most affordable Android phone in the first half of this year, so it will definitely be cheap.

Put Me in your pocket

At Mobile World Congress, it was difficult to gauge exactly how the Me really feels, because it was tethered to the ground with 50 feet of industrial, thief-defying cable. Still, it felt quite petite in our grasp, and, measuring 58 by 108 by 12mm, it's small enough to snugly squeeze into your pockets without creating a bulge that will put people off their dinner. It weighs 108g, so it should feel very light.

The Me's design isn't exactly ground-breaking, but its rounded edges are easy on the eye. It should arrive in a range of different colours too. One interesting design feature is that the call-answer and hang-up buttons are set into a small plastic bar that sticks out from the front of the phone slightly. It helps to jazz up the front of the phone.

The 2.8-inch display is on the small side and has a low resolution of 320x240 pixels. That's the same resolution as offered by the HTC Wildfire's screen, another miniature, budget Android phone. This is potentially a deal-breaker, as such a low-res screen doesn't show Android at its best. The Me also faces competition from the new version of the Wildfire, the Wildfire S, which offers a higher resolution than the Me on a larger, 3.2-inch screen.

The Me runs Android 2.2 Froyo. Android is Google's mobile operating system, and we think it's rather ace. With Froyo, you'll enjoy a wealth of features, including access to the Android Market app store, and Flash support in the browser. That will make for a rich browsing experience.

Outlook

Despite an uninspiring screen, we're not about to throw the LG Optimus Me P350 on the proverbial scrap heap before we've had a chance to give it a full review. If the Me is substantially cheaper than the Wildfire S, it could be worth considering.
